WASHINGTON –The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first drug to treat heartburn in children, and the new drug may also help treat a heart condition in children.
The new drug, AstraZeneca’s Nexium, will be approved by the FDA for use in adults. The drug’s brand is still under review by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
In a statement, the FDA said the drug will be made available for children only.
“These results will help improve our ability to treat heartburn, and encourage parents to take control of their health through prescription medication,” the agency said in the statement.
Nexium is a new anti-inflammatory drug to treat acid reflux, a common condition that affects the stomach and esophagus.
The drug was approved by the FDA in 2001 to treat heartburn and other stomach complaints caused by acid reflux.
Esomeprazole, another new drug, was approved in 2011 to treat stomach and esophagus problems caused by acid reflux. It is currently the only one.
